Key of the system is the DIN A4 sized sheet of tearproof Tyvek paper as
shown on the right. It contains the bib, two strips with transponders and
short instructions how to attach them to the shoes. The parts can be separated
along perforation lines.
Since the bib and the transponders are one physical unit, the distribution
of bibs and transponders is much faster compared to other chip systems and
it is unlikely that runners swap their transponders. The bibs can also be
sent via mail very easily.
The runner separates the Tyvek strips with transponders, folds them once
and can thread them into his show laces very quickly. The chip is tight,
does not move and is according to our interviews no impairment while running.
Surprisingly, attaching the transponders on shoes with hook-and-loop fasteners
using a safety pin does not seem to be a problem.
Using two transponders instead of one has numerous advantages: the detection
rate is much higher compared to other timing systems, the mat can be much
shorter and thus be shipped easily, and finally close finishings are measured
precisely since it is irrelevant which foot reaches the finish line first.
Attaching Transponders
The instructions which are delivered joined with the bib show
how the transponders have to be attached to the shoes:
